AI speech assignment

This is an assignment that I did for class that I liked.

As most of you are aware, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept talked about in movies, it has already taken the world by storm. AI is shaping the way we interact with technology every day. From chatbots to recommendation algorithms on social media platforms. AI is becoming an integral part of our lives. But with this rapid development comes a significant issue that many of us might not fully understand yet: AI bias.

AI bias refers to the phenomenon where AI systems, like the ones we interact with on a daily basis, reflect the biases present in the data they are trained on. To explain this, let’s look at how AI works. Essentially, AI takes information from the internet, analyzes patterns, and uses those patterns to generate responses. Now, here’s the problem: the internet is full of human biases—whether that’s based on gender, race, or even cultural perspectives. Since AI pulls information from the internet or previous records, it will inadvertently pick up these biases or create them based on patterns, resulting in responses that may reinforce stereotypes or offer skewed perspectives. One example is In the US healthcare system. Most of our healthcare system is currently using an algorithm which affects people across the country. Unfortunately this algorithm favors white people because AI doesn’t take into account factors such as an individual’s economic situation, their schedule, and more, only medical records are taken into account. This can lead to patients being unable to follow the directions completely and the treatment not working as well. Overall, this pattern is spotted by the AI and it makes a generalization about all black people And causes black people to distrust the healthcare system more than they already do.

Another issue is something known as sycophancy in AI—this is when the AI agrees with everything you say, often inflating your ideas and telling you exactly what you want to hear. For instance, there was a case where someone jokingly suggested starting a business selling “poop on a stick” to the AI. Instead of pointing out the absurdity of the idea, the AI enthusiastically called it “genius”, saying you were selling a sense of rebellion and even suggested investing $30,000 into it. This isn’t just a funny mistake; it highlights how AI can sometimes lack critical thinking, and instead, flatters the user and feeds them information that isn’t necessarily accurate or helpful. This can lead to an echo chamber effect, which is when someone is in an environment where their ideas are reflected back to them reinforcing their ideas and belief system. A belief system is an ideology or set of principles that helps us to interpret our everyday reality

So, how does this affect us? At first glance, AI bias might seem like a minor issue, but it has the potential to subtly influence how we think, make decisions, and interact with others. While we may not consciously acknowledge the bias in AI responses, it can reinforce our implicit bias which can result in us developing stereotypes and judging others by those preconceived ideas. Leading to a narrow view of the world, where our perspectives are shaped by the biases already present in the data AI pulls from.

So, what can we do to combat this issue?

The first step is to think critically about how AI responds. We must recognize that AI is not always right or neutral, and it’s up to us to challenge its conclusions when needed. By questioning the information we get from AI, we can ensure that it aligns more closely with reality. We can also make specific prompts when interacting with AI. The more specific we are in our requests, the less room there is for bias to seep into the response. This helps the AI to better understand the context, reducing the likelihood of skewed or incorrect information being presented.

AI is a powerful tool, but it is not without its flaws. As technology continues to advance, it’s important to remember that AI is still a work in progress. It makes mistakes, just like we do. Therefore, it’s essential to approach AI with a healthy dose of skepticism and think for ourselves. Don’t rely on AI blindly. It’s a useful tool, but it’s up to us to make sure that the information we get is accurate and reflects the world as it truly is.
